Colorado – Westcliffe

This small Southern Colorado town is one of the few remaining places where you can still get an authentic taste of the Old West. Rub shoulders with local ranchers as you enjoy an ice cream and explore the charming main street, all with the towering 4,000+ meter peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range as your backdrop. It’s also an International Dark Sky community with unparalleled stargazing, and a perfect jumping-off point for some of the best hikes in Colorado and unexpected destinations like the tallest sand dunes in North America.

California – Gualala

Welcome to the Pacific Coast Highway you dreamed of, without the crowds. This isolated hamlet on the Northern California coast is a place to explore craggy bluffs, windswept beaches, and towering redwoods. Hop in a canoe or kayak and cruise along the peaceful Gualala River, spot whales gliding along the coast, visit charming art galleries, explore the modernist utopia of Sea Ranch, or check out a 19th-century Russian settlement.

Alaska – Cordova

Experience coastal Alaska as it once was—and still is. Unreachable by road, Cordova sits between the Chugach Mountains and Prince William Sound, a working fishing town defined by water, weather, and wilderness. Explore the vast Copper River Delta, one of North America’s richest wetlands, or follow the Copper River Highway as it traces glaciers, braided rivers, and windswept shoreline. Paddle quiet coves by kayak, watch salmon run beneath your feet, spot sea otters and whales in the Sound, or hike through old-growth rainforest where bears and eagles are part of the landscape. This is Alaska for those who value authenticity over spectacle.

Florida – Marco Island

Florida’s southwest coast is a relatively laid-back alternative to the hustle and bustle of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Situated in the Ten Thousand Islands, it’s a nature-lover’s paradise. Visit a barrier island only reachable by boat to explore its soft white sand beaches littered with beautiful shells, then head back to civilization and enjoy fresh seafood at a laid-back waterfront joint. Set off into the innumerable channels where the Everglades meet the sea by kayak to search for manatees and dolphins.
